Newport Harbor Advances to State Volleyball Semifinals

April Ross had 17 kills and Jennifer Carey had 42 assists to help top-seeded Newport Harbor easily defeat Bakersfield Centennial, 15-4, 15-3, 15-2, in the quarterfinals of the girls’ volleyball Division I state tournament Saturday at Newport Harbor High.
Newport Harbor (25-0) never trailed in the match.
Centennial (30-7) was tied in the first game, 2-2, and in the second game, Centennial was as close as 3-2 before Newport Harbor pulled away to win both games easily. In the third game, Newport Harbor raced to 12-0 lead.
Kathy Lavold had 11 kills for Newport Harbor, which advanced to host Marina in Tuesday’s semifinals at 7 p.m. Last year, Newport Harbor lost to eventual state champion Marina in five games in the Division I state tournament quarterfinals
