Lemieux Goes to Arbitration

Former all-star Mario Lemieux asked an arbitrator in Pittsburgh to order the Penguins to pay him $33 million.
One of Lemieux’s attorneys said Lemieux’s contract contains a clause that calls for immediate payment if someone other than Howard Baldwin takes over the Penguins. Lemieux, who has also sued the Penguins, contends co-owner Roger Marino now controls the team.

The Boston Bruins signed two of their holdouts, including last season’s leading scorer, Jason Allison.The Bruins signed Allison, 23, to a two-year contract and forward Ted Donato, 29, to a one-year deal.

The Edmonton Oilers traded goalkeeper Eric Fichaud and defensemen Drake Berehowsky and Greg De Vries to Nashville for forward Jim Dowd and goalkeeper Mikhail Shtalenkov.
In a separate move, the Oilers signed free agent defenseman Marty McSorley to a one-year deal.

The New York Rangers acquired right wing Mike Knuble from the Detroit Red Wings for a third-round pick in the 2000 draft. . . . Nashville Predator right wing Sergei Krivokrasov was suspended for three preseason games and fined $1,000 by the NHL for a high sticking incident and match penalty Saturday against St. Louis. . . . Montreal Canadiens defenseman Sylvain Blouin was suspended for two preseason games and fined $1,000 by the NHL for checking from behind and a game misconduct penalty Sunday against Chicago.
