Grupo Gigante, one of Mexico’s largest supermarket chains, plans to open its first U.S. store in Pico Rivera on Wednesday. May 5 is the important Mexican holiday marking the defeat of French invaders by Mexican forces in the Battle of Puebla. The 60,000-square-foot La Gigante store on Whittier Boulevard, which will cater to Latino shoppers with a blend of Mexican and U.S. food brands, is the first of six stores the retailer will open in the Los Angeles area. Two more are scheduled to open Sept. 16, Mexican Independence Day. Grupo Gigante operates 182 stores in 52 cities in Mexico.
