UCI Should Drop ‘Egg-Stealing’ Suit

* I think it’s obscene that UC Irvine intends to sue some of its former doctors for “stealing” human eggs (July 17).
Where is the wrong in making some poor souls in this world happy by giving them children they couldn’t otherwise have? Where is the wrong if some embryos that nobody planned to grow into human beings were used to conduct invaluable medical research that will ultimately come back to us and save lives or reduce suffering or cure tragic diseases?
Technology has made women’s eggs portable, just like men’s sperm. But certain lawyers saw a chance to profit by suing for “damages” to these women. Unfortunately, through gross errors by the courts, those lawsuits were successful.
There is no greater good than giving birth to, and raising, a happy, healthy child who knows that he or she is loved and wanted. In the greater scheme of things, how the human sperm and egg got together is pretty unimportant.
UCI should immediately cancel its plans to sue for “egg-stealing.”
