Serra High School students have raised $2,000 in donations to help a fellow classmate in need of a kidney transplant.
Griselda Sanchez, 19, suffers from end stage renal disease. Neither of her kidneys can filter the toxins in her body, according to Dr. Jorge Ortiz, director of the renal transplant program at UCI Medical Center. Without a transplant, she could die, he said.
Their goal is to raise $5,000, according to Serra High School teacher Sue Chance. The money will ease the financial burden for Griselda and the donor--probably her sister, who will miss a few weeks of work after the surgery.
Donations can be mailed directly to Serra High School, 31431 El Camino Real, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675.
