A classroom at the Naval Construction Battalion Center and a base restaurant were evacuated Wednesday after a maintenance crew accidentally severed a gas line.
The crew was making sewer repairs about 10:30 a.m. when a backhoe ruptured a gas line outside the classroom, base spokeswoman Linda Wadley said. As a precaution, the base Fire Department cleared 79 people from the classroom and 20 from Duke’s Place, the nearby enlisted club.
The leak was stopped by 12:50 p.m. and Duke’s reopened by 1 p.m., Wadley said.
