James’ Double Victory Lifts Matadors Sky-High

Cal State Northridge, led by double winner Nancy James, romped to its first women’s indoor track and field title in the Big Sky Conference championships at Idaho State on Tuesday.
James, a senior from Hart High, was chosen the women’s running event athlete of the meet after winning the mile in a school indoor record time of 4:53.32. She won the 800 meters in 2:11.25 about 1 1/2 hours later.
Senior Micki Rogers, junior Brandi Prieto, sophomore Annetta Wells and sophomore LaShaunda Fowler won individual events for the Matadors, who had a meet-record 165 points.
Northern Arizona, the three-time defending champion, placed second with 109 points.
Rogers won the 60 hurdles in 8.48 and Prieto won her third consecutive triple jump title with a school-record 41-7 1/2. Wells won the 200 in 24.34 and Fowler took time away from playing guard on the Northridge basketball team to win the 60 in 7.58.
The Matadors took five of the top six places in the 60 and scored 31 of a possible 39 points in the event.
Northridge won the 1,600 relay in a school-record 3:42.92.
The Matadors had 98 points in the men’s meet to finish fourth.
Weber State won with 112 1/2 points, followed by Northern Arizona with 107 1/2 and two-time defending champion Idaho State with 101 2/3.
Northridge sophomore Clinte Motley was selected men’s field event athlete of the meet for the second year in a row. Motley won his second consecutive triple jump title with a 49-7 leap Tuesday after winning the long jump at 24-4 1/4 and tying for second in the high jump at 7-0 3/4 on Monday.
SOFTBALL
Moorpark 4, Pasadena City 3--Tommie Payan scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk to Jill Clarkson in the seventh inning of a nonconference game at Moorpark (10-2).
BASEBALL
Chapman 5, Cal Lutheran 4--The Panthers (7-0) scored four unearned runs in the eighth to win a nonconference game at Cal Lutheran (6-2).
Canyons 16, Ventura 13--Anthony Trejo’s sixth-inning grand slam helped the Cougars snap a four-game losing streak in a nonconference game at Ventura. Trejo had five hits and drove in six runs.
Sergio Franco had three hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in five runs, and Travis Richardson had five hits for Canyons (4-9).
Fullerton 5, Valley 4--Sigi Arroyo had three hits, including a double and a triple, for Valley (5-9) in a nonconference game at Fullerton (10-5).
