First Katella Football Coach Dies

Bob Lampshire, the first football coach at Katella High, died June 17 in Las Vegas. He was 71.
Lampshire, born in Pacoima, attended Los Angeles Polytechnic High and Pepperdine. . He played quarterback and punter for Pepperdine and played quarterback for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League.
Lampshire later moved to Orange County, where he was an assistant coach at Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos before taking becoming the head coach at Katella.
He is survived by his wife Erlene, his brother Francis, four children, Cathy Lampshire, Christy Dane, Robert H. Lampshire and Rick Lampshire, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held July 9, at 2 p.m. at the Riverside National Cemetery. All friends, students and associates of Lampshire are invited to attend. For information contact, Dick Bingham, (949) 699-6681.

* John Knox has resigned as the girls’ cross-country and boys’ and girls’ track coach at Irvine High. Knox, who accepted the position on June 21, cited personal reasons for his departure, according to Irvine Athletic Director Erik Terry.
