Second City Gets Second Buildings Tour

The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s long-running river tour of the Second City’s renowned buildings is getting some competition: Shoreline, a Chicago tour company, has started up shorter, less expensive tours.
Shoreline’s cruise, narrated by graduate architecture students at the Illinois Institute of Technology, takes an hour and travels about 7 1/2 miles up the Chicago River. Departing from Navy Pier, it costs $14 for adults, $7 for children under 12, and is offered several times a day to Oct. 15. Architects and firms represented on the tour include Ludwig Mies van der Rohe; Holabird & Root; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Bertrand Goldberg Associates. Call (312) 222-9328.
The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s tour, narrated by docents who undergo 10 weeks of training, runs several times a day, lasts 1 1/2 hours and costs $18 adults and children. It departs near Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. Information: tel. (312) 922-3432.
