Air Quality

Your July 2 editorial, “Better Air for Young Lungs,” points out a proactive approach to our children’s respiratory health that we would be irresponsible to ignore. The proposed legislation by state Sen. Martha Escutia, SB 25, is a common-sense measure that proposes reviewing existing air quality standards and toxic air contaminants and determining whether state criteria adequately protect infants and children, who are more susceptible to toxins than adults. One of the bill’s co-sponsors is the American Lung Assn. of California. The medical arguments for doing this are sound.
We should not be afraid to find out what the facts are, and what the impacts are on our children’s quality of life. Going the extra mile in monitoring air quality seems like a wise investment.
