Law enforcement efforts in the new downtown area got a boost Tuesday when the City Council approved a $33,409 federal grant to help fund the police bicycle patrol. The grant will supplement the department’s budget for the bicycle patrol program downtown, around Birch Street and Brea Boulevard. The city must match the grant with 10% cash.
For the last year, there has been a police presence in the shopping and entertainment district, parts of which are still being built, said Tim O’Donnell, the assistant city manager. The Birch Street Promenade, the hub of the downtown project, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Bicycles are one of the most effective ways for police to watch for shoplifting or other criminal activity in an outdoor shopping center.
“We want to get in front of these issues,” O’Donnell said. “We don’t wait for the problem to start.”
