Edison High’s Lee Ann Morton scored in the 82nd minute to give the Mission Viejo Mirage a 1-1 tie with Tophat 99 Gold (Atlanta) in the under-18 girls’ division of the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships Friday in Orlando, Fla.
The Mirage had already qualified to play in Sunday’s Kelly Cup final, finishing round-robin play with a record of 2-0-1. In the championship game, the Mirage will play Northport/Cow Harbor Piranha (2-1), a team it defeated, 4-1, in the opener Tuesday.
BASKETBALL
Giuliana Mendiola, who led the county in scoring the last two seasons, has made an oral commitment to play women’s basketball at Washington.
Mendiola, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, averaged 24.8 points and 7.5 assists for El Toro. She was a Times All-Orange County first-team player last season during her junior year, her second such selection.
Her older sister, Gioconda Mendiola, already signed a letter of intent with Washington. Gioconda said Friday she will not attend Washington until the 2000-01 season so the sisters can enter the program at the same time.
Gioconda was a second-team all-county selection last season for El Toro. She averaged 17.7 points and 7.2 assists.
