Mountain Gorilla Park Reopened in Rwanda

KIGALI, Rwanda — Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, home to about 300 of the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, has reopened after two years.
Visits to the site were suspended in June 1997 during an armed insurgency. The area has become safer since a Rwandan-backed rebellion began in eastern Congo last August, depriving Rwandan insurgents of nearby bases. The gorillas live near Rwanda’s northern borders with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Eight tourists at a time, with armed guards, will be allowed to visit the gorillas, officials said.
