Alexander Ad Takes Aim at Bush’s Cash

DES MOINES — Republican presidential hopeful Lamar Alexander debuts his opening television commercial of the presidential campaign this week, warning that “big money” is threatening the GOP contest.
The 30-second television spot begins airing in most Iowa television markets today and is a direct shot at the Republican presidential front-runner, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who recently reported having $30 million in cash on hand, 10 times more than his closest GOP rival.
By contrast, Alexander reported having about $100,000 in the bank.
One scene features cigar-smoking bidders on the White House lawn wearing cowboy hats and bidding for the GOP presidential nomination.
“Big money is a big issue,” said Alexander’s political director, Brian Kennedy. “There is a risk the Republican nomination will not be decided on the issues, rather it will be nothing more than a fund-raising contest.”
