Minorities on TV

* Re “A White, White World on TV’s Fall Schedule,” May 28: It’s worth noting that most movies of the week, most miniseries and many dramatic shows are no longer filmed in Hollywood or even the United States. Why are network executives surprised that fewer shows “look” like America?
In Business on May 4 there was also a report from the Screen Actors Guild noting a change in the ethnic makeup for acting jobs. The percentage of blacks and Hispanics has decreased while the relative percentages for whites and Asians have increased. If the networks’ goal is to look like Vancouver, they can declare success.
With more and more shows done in Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, etc. we can’t expect programs that offer ethnic and cultural diversity. This is a tragedy on screen as well as a real financial disaster for all the crew people who are increasing unemployed in L.A.

Headlines from May 28: “A White, White World on TV’s Fall Schedule” and “Networks Face a Prime-Time Viewer Plunge” (Calendar). Hmm. Wonder if there could be any connection?
