Zunder Storms to Singles Sweep

Adam Zunder of Campbell Hall High had looked forward to pitting his skills against Calabasas standout Nick Weiss.

But the match never materialized when the teams met on Tuesday.

Weiss, Calabasas’s top player and ranked No. 10 in the nation in the boys’ 16s by the U.S. Tennis Assn., didn’t play because of a sore shoulder.

So Zunder settled for helping the Vikings rout the short-handed Coyotes, 14-4, in a nonleague match at Calabasas.

Zunder, ranked No. 9 in boys’ 16s in Southern California, overpowered the Coyotes’ revamped lineup. He beat Alex Menichini, Weiss’ replacement at No. 1 singles, 6-2, Aaron Zolanz, 6-0, and Adam Seville, 6-0.

“I was hyped up to play Nick, and I took it all out on Alex and the other guys,” Zunder said. “Everything was working for me.”

Not much worked for Menichini, a talented junior left-hander who had beaten Zunder in their previous meeting in a junior tournament. Menichini fell behind, 4-1, and never recovered.

Menichini won his other singles sets against junior Micheal Schrage and freshman Josh Snyder.

Campbell Hall (6-1) won seven of nine doubles sets, including three victories by the No. 1 team of seniors Shaunt Vanerian and Nick Nadjarian.

Braden Aftergood, who would have played at No. 3 singles had Weiss played, teamed with Trevor Hindin to claim the only two doubles victories for Calabasas (3-5).

Aftergood and Hindin defeated Justin Hardt and Phil Suh, 6-0, and Ross Erlich and Graham Thiel, 6-1.
