New School Opens Today in Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE — A South Bay school named after Alan B. Shepard, the first U.S. astronaut to fly into space, will open today for students with special needs.
Shepard school will begin by teaching 55 students from kindergarten to the eighth grade, said Deena Sharp, the school principal. Enrollment will be open to eligible students from surrounding school districts.
A dedication ceremony will take place today at 11 a.m. at 12495 Isis Ave. Students will read letters from the family of Shepard, who accomplished his historic mission 38 years ago, said Margo Minecki, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County office of education. He died July 21 at the age of 74.
The school will coordinate its educational programs with on-site psychological counseling, Sharp said.
