Woman Motorist, 78, Dies Following 2-Car Collision

A 78-year-old woman died Thursday morning after the car she was driving was struck by another vehicle in West Hills, police said.
Ethel Surowitz of Encino was attempting to turn left into a private driveway just after 11 a.m. when her Ford Thunderbird was struck by a Ford Probe in the 22500 block of Vanowen Street, Los Angeles Police Officer Connie Silber said.

Traffic death--A story in Friday’s Times about a collision that killed a 78-year-old Encino woman was incomplete. Police said the driver of the other car in the crash, Kyle Hoffman, was not charged because the victim was at fault in making a left turn in front of him.
Surowitz, who may have suffered a fatal heart attack just before or after the accident, was pronounced dead 45 minutes later at Columbia West Hills Medical Center, Silber said.
The driver of the Probe, Kyle Hoffman, 19, of West Hills, suffered minor injuries, Silber said. He was treated at the scene.
Silber said no charges will be filed against Hoffman.
