State Senate OKs Funds for Flight-Path Soundproofing

The state Senate voted Wednesday to add $400,000 to the state budget for insulating 50 homes that lie under the flight path of Burbank Airport.
The state funding will be matched by a $1.6-million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for a sound insulation program.
“The state has a clear and compelling interest in ensuring that homes in the most heavily noise-impacted areas are insulated against burdensome aircraft noise,” state Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) said in a statement.
The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority has spent $22 million to soundproof homes and schools, according to Burbank Airport officials.
“Any possible funds from other sources is a great enhancement of the ability to generate federal grants,” said airport spokesman Victor Gill. “Local money is very well spent on these grants because every 20 cents from a local source gets you the spending power of a dollar. There aren’t too many deals like that around.”
