Chapman Edges Cal Maritime in Men’s Basketball

Chapman used nearly flawless free-throw shooting to help defeat Cal Maritime, 71-70, in the first round of the Chapman men’s basketball tournament Friday.
The Panthers made 20 of 21 free throws, highlighted by Tim Werdel’s eight-for-eight effort. Werdel led the Panthers with 29 points and Brian VonDerahe had 11 points.
Julio Abril had 24 points to lead Cal Maritime.
In the Concordia Turkey men’s basketball tournament:
Concordia 84, Seattle 58--Concordia took a 47-23 halftime lead on its way to the first-round victory. All five Concordia starters reached double figures in scoring, led by center Harry Hoffman’s 18 points. The Eagles will face St. Thomas in the championship tonight.
In nonconference women’s basketball:
Southern California College 61, Creighton 56--Tashara Carter scored 13 points and Ayeshia Smith added 12 to lead host SCC, which trailed, 30-27, at halftime.
UC Irvine 92, Texas San Antonio 44--Seven Anteaters scored in double figures. Brandy Hudson had 12 points for Irvine (1-1).
