La Habra 27, Whittier La Serna 7--La Habra’s Josh Herrera rushed for 142 yards in 22 carries and scored three touchdowns in a nonleague game at La Habra High.
Herrera’s first touchdown came with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter when he scored on a nine-yard run, giving the Highlanders (1-4) a 13-7 lead. The touchdown run was set up by La Habra’s Marcus Arredondo, who recovered a La Serna fumble at the Lancer 45 and returned it to the nine.
The fumble marked the beginning of a mistake-filled evening for La Serna (2-3), which committed four turnovers.
Herrera’s second touchdown, a three-yard run, capped a 72-yard drive that consumed eight minutes in the third quarter.
Herrera then ran off left tackle for a 74-yard touchdown with 3:23 remaining to make it, 27-7.
La Habra Coach Frank Mazzotta said it felt great to finally get the first victory of the season.
“It was fantastic, “ he said. “It was a quality win. La Serna is a quality program.”
