Capistrano Valley Christian 49, Sierra Madre Maranatha 15--Capistrano Valley Christian’s Dustin Smith led a dominating rushing attack in a nonleague game.
Smith rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns in 22 carries, powering a running attack that generated 334 yards for the Eagles (4-1).
The Eagles dominated the second half, outscoring the Minutemen, 30-2.
Smith started the scoring with a nine-yard run with 4:49 left in the first quarter. However, Maranatha scored 13 unanswered points thanks to Matt Mills’ two touchdown passes to David Newkirk, from 29 and three yards.
The Minutemen had a 13-10 halftime lead, but the Eagles took control from there.
Thomas Grove ran for a 46-yard touchdown with 8:03 left in the third quarter.
After Maranatha scored its final points on a safety, running back Bryan Peters caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Jason Ward with 4:23 remaining in the third quarter.
That score was set up when Capistrano Valley’s defense recovered a bad snap at the Maranatha 10-yard line.
The Eagles scored four more rushing touchdowns: Grove for 42 yards, Peters for 20 and 23 yards and Smith for 15.
