* Pitching matchups: Ramon Ortiz (1-3, 6.68 ERA) vs. Ryan Rupe (8-9, 4.55); Jarrod Washburn (2-4, 6.68) vs. Dan Wheeler (0-2, 5.49) Wednesday.

* Last series: The Angels lost two of three games in St. Petersburg in late July. Fred McGriff hit two home runs in the Devils Rays’ 7-0 victory in the first game. The Angels stopped an 11-game losing streak with a 10-5 victory the next day.

* About the Devil Rays: Fred McGriff hit his 30th home in a 15-2 victory over Texas Sunday. He and teammate Jose Canseco are the only players to hit 30 home runs for four different teams. McGriff has done it for Toronto, San Diego, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Canseco has done it for Oakland, Toronto, Texas and Tampa Bay.

AT SEATTLE

* Last series: The Angels won two of three games June 22-24. Mo Vaughn had five hits, two of which were home runs, and drove in six runs in a 12-7 victory in the last game of the series.

* About the Mariners: Woody Woodward has resigned as general manager after 12 seasons. Lou Piniella has flipped out a few times this season. Whether Alex Rodriguez or Ken Griffey Jr. remain in Seattle is an uneasy question. And still, the Mariners are 12 1/2 games ahead of the Angels. Jamie Moyer (14-7) is 13-3 with a 2.74 earned-run average since May 11.
