Olympic gold medalist Kim Maher will host a rally Sunday in support of building a regional sports park in Ventura.
Proponents have been pushing the City Council to OK the building of a park for months. The park is among suggestions by the city’s Seize the Future Committee, which was formed to present a vision of the future based on public opinion.
Maher, a softball player who won a gold with the American team at the 1996 Atlanta games, grew up in Ventura, attended Buena High School and now coaches at UC Berkeley.
“She’s such a role model,” said Madelyn Jones, one of the rally’s organizers. “And this is something we’re trying really hard for.”
The rally is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Ventura Marina Mobile Home Park Clubhouse, 1215 Anchors Way Drive, Ventura.
