No. 1 Mayfair Pulls Rank on Los Amigos

Lakewood Mayfair scored 27 points in the first half and cruised to a 46-6 victory over Los Amigos in a nonleague game Friday night at Bellflower High.

The Monsoons (3-0), the top-ranked team in Division VI and defending Division IX champions, showcased an efficient passing attack led by quarterback Drew Gonzales, who completed seven of 13 passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns. Big plays from the Mayfair special teams provided two touchdowns.

“We didn’t play real well on special teams,” said Los Amigos Coach David Olson, who watched both Michael Williams and Mike Bragg return punts 58 yards for touchdowns. “We knew [Mayfair] had a lot of speed on that side of the ball, but I don’t think our kids realized they were that fast.”

Mayfair’s quickness was complemented by a huge offensive line. The Lobos (0-3) were unable to pressure Gonzales, who picked apart the Lobo secondary for scoring passes of eight, 13 and 49 yards.

“They were big up front and it was tough to move them,” Olson said.

The Lobos, who were victimized by five fumbles, were able to finally get on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter. Quarterback Richard Dinh engineered a five-play, 83-yard drive, highlighted by Aotoa Sualua’s 45-yard catch and run.

Two plays later, Dinh would score on a 12-yard quarterback keeper. Dinh completed three of 10 passes for 69 yards
