Black College Event Ends on a Good Note

Black College Reunion, a spring break event marred in recent years by violence and charges of racial discrimination, ended on a more positive note in Daytona Beach, Fla., with felony arrests down and revelers saying they felt more welcomed than in years past. “This year, I got to my room and there was the telephone. There was the mini-bar. There was the pictures on the wall. There was everything I’d paid for,” said Tony Williams, 24, a graduate of Florida A&M; University, one of four traditionally black Florida colleges associated with the annual event. Williams was staying at the Adam’s Mark hotel, which last month paid $8 million to settle a rash of lawsuits stemming from last year’s event.
