The City Council is scheduled Wednesday to review a letter to the California Public Utilities Commission in support of keeping the city’s 949 area code for at least eight years, seven months.
The commission has asked for the city’s input because demand for a wide variety of telephone services, including cellular phones, pagers, fax machines and computer modems, is exhausting available numbers in the area code.
Keeping the same area code would minimize impact to residents during the next five to 10 years when a new civic center and other facilities are built, city officials said.
The council will meet at 7 p.m. at 100 Avenida Presidio.
