The City Council has approved testing noise levels for numerous homes within 300 feet of Ortega Highway.
Homeowners who experience noise levels exceeding 43 decibels could receive assistance from Orange County to soundproof their homes.
In a 1995 settlement, the county agreed to compensate the city for any traffic noise associated with moving trash from outside the county to Prima Deshecha, a sanitary landfill that lies partly in San Juan Capistrano.
Homes next to the roadway used by the trucks were tested in summer 1998; most of the city testing will be in the area behind those residences.
The testing will cost no more than $25,965, according to a city report.
