San Clemente Girls Defeat Mission Viejo in Swimming

Stephanie Chambers, Sarah Jones and Kristin Caverly won individual events to lead 10th-ranked San Clemente to a 97-75 victory over No. 5 Mission Viejo in a South Coast League girls’ swim meet Tuesday at San Clemente.
Chambers won the 200 freestyle (1:54.91) and 100 butterfly (1:00.66); Jones took the 50 (23.98) and 100 freestyles (52.12); and Caverly took firsts in the 500 freestyle (4:57.57) and the 100 breaststroke (1:04.64) for the Tritons (7-1, 5-0).
In South Coast League boys’ swimming:
Dana Hills 89, No. 6 El Toro 81--James Leishman won the 50 (22.10) and 100 freestyles (49.80), and swam on the winning freestyle relay teams for visiting Dana Hills (7-1, 5-0).
No. 2 Mission Viejo 99, San Clemente 71--Mission Viejo’s Juan Veloz, who holds the fastest time in the county for the 100 butterfly, recorded the county’s second fastest time in the 200 freestyle, winning the event in 1:44.34. Teammate Torwai Sethsothorn won the 200 individual medley (1:59.45) and the 500 freestyle (4:48.67).
Kenny Yamamoto won the 100 backstroke (57.88) and Chris Cupito won the 100 freestyle (51.19) for San Clemente (3-4, 2-3).
In the Anaheim Lions baseball tournament:
Savanna 3, No. 10 Cypress 1--Danny Lambaren (5-5) pitched a six-hitter for Savanna (9-13). Fabian De La Torre went three for three and drove in the eventual winning run in the second inning. Cypress fell to 13-7.
In the Pacific Coast League:
No. 7 University 6, Laguna Beach 5--Matt Gamble (7-0) struck out 13 and allowed only four hits for host University (16-4, 7-0), which remained in first place.
Jay Nichols, was three for three with an RBI and scored a run to lead the offense for the Trojans.
In Pacific Coast League boys’ golf:
Corona del Mar 198, No. 5 University 204--John Kwon shot par 36 and his brother Joe shot 37 at Strawberry Farms for the Sea Kings (11-4, 6-1), who moved into a first-place tie with University (11-3, 6-1). Corona del Mar, 0-10 in the Sea View League last year, can clinch a PCL co-championship if it beats Costa Mesa on Thursday.

El Toro 415, Mission Viejo 415 (ET wins on No. 6 player’s card)--El Toro (7-6, 7-2) clinched at least a tie for the league title when the sixth players’ scores were compared to break the tie at Mission Viejo Country Club. Eric Lyons’ 15-over 87 was sixth score for the Chargers. Wade Jones shot 77 to pace El Toro. Vince Poncino of Mission Viejo was medalist with a 73.
In the Sunset League:
No. 3 Huntington Beach 175, Marina 185--Andy Anderson shot three-under 32, and Kevin Kohara shot a 33 to lead the Oilers (7-1 in league) at Meadowlark. Anderson had three birdies and an eagle. Freshman Mike Zaniboni shot a 33 for Marina (2-6 in league).
In Century League boys’ tennis:
No. 9 Canyon 9, Foothill 9 (77-74)--John Nguyen swept in singles, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0, for the visiting Comanches (14-2, 8-0).
In the Sea View League:
No. 5 Woodbridge 13, Aliso Niguel 5--Brett Van Linge swept at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, 6-2, for Woodbridge (13-6, 7-0).
