Things to do this weekend with your money
Free or low-cost 401(k) investment advice is becoming increasingly available, particularly if you have an Internet connection:
* Today: Ask your employer what’s available in terms of plan advice. A few companies have made agreements with financial advisors to provide specific investment help to employees.
* Saturday: Check with some of the mutual fund companies represented in your 401(k) plan. Many 401(k) plan administrators have automated retirement planners on their Web sites. These range from simple calculators to sophisticated interactive services that offer specific fund recommendations.
* Sunday: Look elsewhere on the Internet for help. Intuit has teamed up with financial advisory firm Team Vest to offer--for free--the 401(k) Advisor at https://www.quicken.com/retirement/401k/adv. Team Vest also offers 401(k) advice over the phone for $49.95. Financial Engines (https://www .financialengines.com) also has received kudos for its advice site, which includes cutting-edge probability calculations as well as fund screening and specific investment recommendations for retirement accounts. Advice costs $14.95 per quarter for 401(k) advice only or $37.50 for advice that includes all tax-deferred retirement accounts, such as IRAs.
