Fair Attendance Still Trails ’99 Pace

Wednesday marked the first day that Ventura County Fair attendance surpassed that of last year.
Fair publicist Teri Raley said 21,408 fair-goers passed through Seaside Park’s turnstiles Wednesday, up from 17,635 on the same day last year. The jump was attributed to home-grown swing artist Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s appearance before more than 10,000 in the Grandstand Arena on Wednesday night.
Since the fair began Aug. 2, turnout has lagged in comparison with last year. Most of the drop is blamed on the delayed opening of the carnival and midway.
The fair has attracted 144,685 visitors so far this summer--down 17% from last year’s 174,169.
