* Re “Resist ‘Do Not Resist’ Advice,” Voices, Aug. 19: I think Christopher Nyerges is a little bit confused, to put it mildly. He equates the advice not to resist an armed assailant with doing nothing about crime at all. Police organizations are grateful for tips on crimes in progress and identifications of suspects from citizens. But the evidence tells us that, on the whole, when citizens try to stop crimes in progress, it creates more problems than it solves. Surely, if someone is trying to kill you, you resist, but not when he threatens you with a firearm. Your life is more important than your money or credit cards.
