Carnival Organizers Say Less Is Momo

Rio de Janeiro is putting its famously fat King Momo, who reigns over the city’s unbridled carnival festivities, on a diet. Faced with growing protests from doctors and following the recent early deaths of two former King Momos, Rio opted for a “politically correct carnival,” officials said. After 12 corpulent candidates weighed in for the title of King Momo at February’s carnival, the city treated them to a feast of salad and diet sodas instead of the traditional all-you-can-eat pasta extravaganza.
