Newspaper publisher Knight Ridder Inc.’s Internet business became the latest “dot-com” to slash jobs, laying off 16% of its work force in an effort to curtail losses. San Jose-based KnightRidder.com, a subsidiary created to cash in on the rise of e-commerce, said it is laying off 68 employees in a reorganization that will create 34 new sales jobs.
