Poll: Rebel Flag on Shaky Ground

CHARLESTON, S.C. — More than half of South Carolina’s residents want the Confederate flag removed from the Capitol dome, a poll revealed Friday.
Fifty-two percent of registered voters questioned by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research Co. favored removing the flag when asked if it should stay or go. Thirty-seven percent opposed removing the flag, and 11% were undecided.
The banner was raised in 1962 during the civil rights movement and the Civil War centennial. Opponents say it represents racism and slavery, while supporters say it is an important emblem of the state’s heritage.
Gov. Jim Hodges, who wants the flag lowered, is trying to negotiate a compromise, which could include moving the flag to a memorial on statehouse grounds.
