LAGUNA BEACH

The City Council is expected tonight to review a petition submitted by the Laguna Beach Firefighters Assn. that could begin the process to dissolve the department and consolidate services with the county.
The petition calls for the Orange County Fire Authority to conduct a study to determine if Laguna Beach’s fire services are less than the county’s. If that is the case, then the city would have to dissolve the department or increase services to match the county’s.
City Clerk Verna L. Rollinger said the association has collected valid signatures from at least 15% of the city’s registered voters, or 2,200.
The City Council can adopt the petition and call for the study or it can call a special election before June 18 to let voters decide whether to have a study.
