In what could be a prelude to the closing of the main nongovernment television station in Serbia, the main Yugoslav republic, men in camouflage uniforms raided Studio B’s transmission facilities, and President Slobodan Milosevic’s government intensified its legal action against the station. Two employees were badly beaten during the predawn raid on the Torlak transmission station, Studio B said. Five assailants wearing police uniforms stormed the compound and tore out cables, causing Studio B to go off the air temporarily, the station said. Hours later, Telecommunications Minister Ivan Markovic ordered Studio B to pay within eight days the equivalent of $850,000 for the use of its frequencies or face legal action. In a statement, police denied involvement in the attack on the station, which has been airing programs critical of Milosevic.
