50 Killed as Bus Plunges Into Canal

At least 50 people drowned when a bus carrying members of a wedding party fell into an irrigation canal in the southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan, a government official said. An additional 24 people were injured, some of them seriously, police said. Nasirabad division commissioner Fasihuddain Ahmed said the death toll from the accident in the Saifullah canal in his area was likely to mount as rescuers continued the search for bodies. The accident occurred in southern Sindh province near Jacobabad, about 260 miles northeast of the port city of Karachi. Most of those who died were women and children, Ahmed said.
