Even at today’s prices, about $1.65 per gallon, lifting the federal tax of 4.3 cents per gallon is a meaningless reduction of 2.6%. Something meaningful would be the state’s sales tax of about 8% or nearly three times as much.

At least there’s one small consolation for the current fuel prices. All these gas-guzzling, air-polluting, view-blocking, tailgating, cell-phone blabbing, non-directional-signal-using SUVs are finally made to pay through the nozzle.
