Although pride was the only thing at stake Thursday night in the Burbank-Burroughs game, Burroughs administrators decided to create excitement by arranging for small fireworks displays after every Burroughs touchdown.
The Indians, who started on the path to their 54-36 victory by scoring on a trick play on the first play from scrimmage, needed 2:19 on their next possession to go 65 yards in five plays for a touchdown with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter.
As Marvin Lowery crossed the goal line after running 47 yards for the score, Marty Garrison, Burroughs boys’ athletic director, turned to a group of reporters and said: “This might get expensive.”
The money ran out before the Burroughs offense, and the pyrotechnic displays were long over when Michael Perez of Burroughs ran 56 yards for his third touchdown with 24 seconds remaining.
