Camarillo High Knows Its Places

Camarillo High School won the 12th annual Geography Bowl competition held recently at Oxnard College.

The first-place students beat teams from eight Ventura County high schools.

Oxnard High teams placed second and third in the contest, which tests students’ knowledge of the environment, economics and geography.

The focus of this year’s competition was conservation. One of the questions asked: “When an unusually colder than normal current off the coast of California causes drought conditions, what is the phenomenon called?” Answer: La Nina.

Camarillo High has dominated the competition for the last several years, winning the title each year since 1995. Camarillo’s team members are Joel Deneau, Alex Nowrasteh, Erin Simon, Martin Broder, Abhi Mishra and Margaret Hsich. The team received a plaque and a king-sized world atlas.

The other competing high schools were Santa Paula, Frontier, Rio Mesa, Hueneme, Channel Islands, Ventura and St. Bonaventure.
