EIGHT-MAN PREVIEWS
EASTSIDE CHRISTIAN
Eastside Christian will try to field a football program again this year, after last season’s attempt failed.
Formerly Heritage Christian, Eastside has struggled to field a team, fluctuating between eight-man, 11-man or no football at all in the past five years.
An eight-man squad was planned for last season, but the Patriots were forced to cancel the program at the beginning of the season because of a lack of players.
The season appeared to be in jeopardy again with only eight players on the roster, but when Southern California Christian closed, 10 former Flames transferred to Eastside. Three key transfers include senior quarterback Alan Mendez, junior offensive lineman Phil Manzo and junior center Chris Bradley.
LIBERTY CHRISTIAN
Liberty Christian, already in good position to make the playoffs in eight-man football this season, has an even better shot after the Express League was reduced to six teams when Southern California Christian closed and Los Angeles Pacific Christian dropped its program.
Coach Guy Wilson, in his fourth year at Liberty Christian, is expecting good things from his squad, which returns all of its skill-position players. All-Southern Section wide receiver Aaron Mendoza is back for his senior year, along with tailback Mike Spagnola, quarterback Nick Harbert and tight end Chris Houser.
