OUTLOOK
Orange won its first game in the Capps era to close the ’99 season, a 14-7 victory over Canyon, and the Panthers hope to build upon that, beginning with Poole. The senior running back is elusive and swift. “He had 700 yards rushing and 300 yards receiving last season,” Capps said. “He’s put on 20 pounds, he’s improved his speed and he just looks scary right now. We’re going to get him the ball 100 different ways.” There are also four returning offensive linemen, led by second-team all-leaguer Davis, to pave the way for Poole. The Panthers need to develop their quarterbacks--Law and Perez are the top candidates--to establish an effective passing attack and prevent teams from loading up to stop Poole. Orange also needs to improve on its ability to stop opponents after allowing an average of 47 points per game over the last two seasons. All-leaguers Rogalski, Powell and Franklin lead a speedy Panther defense. “We have 11 guys who can run,” Capps said. “As long as they do the job once they get there and tackle.”
