* Strings--The respected Penderecki String Quartet will perform today at 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State St. Program: works by Mozart, Bartok and Brahms. The ensemble performs regularly at Carnegie Hall and around the world. Museum members, $9; nonmembers, $12. 884-6427.

* Dance--Theatre UCSB, UC Santa Barbara’s Department of Dramatic Art/Division of Dance, will stage its “Spring Dances 2001” on campus at Hatlen Theatre. * Screening--UC Santa Barbara’s Arts & Lectures will present “An Evening With John Cleese” and a screening of Monty Python’s “The Meaning of Life” on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the campus’ Campbell Hall. * Vocalist--Jazz notable Shirley Horn will perform with her trio Friday at 8 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre, 33 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara. Horn’s latest project, “I Remember Miles,” is an homage to her friend, mentor and fan, Miles Davis. In the 1960s, the famed trumpeter insisted that Horn open for him at the legendary Village Vanguard jazz club. $28-$38. 963-0761.

* Classical--The Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra will be joined by guest trumpeter Timothy Morrison on Tuesday at the Lobero Theatre, 33 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara.
