Official in Chechnya Killed in Explosion

Russia’s intelligence service blamed rebels for a blast that ripped through a Chechen TV studio, killing a high-ranking official in Chechnya’s pro-Russian government.
Adam Deniyev was taping a Koran reading for broadcast when the explosion occurred in the village of Avtury late Thursday, a government spokesman said.
Deniyev was a presidential candidate in the separatist Russian republic’s 1997 election that was won by rebel commander Aslan Maskhadov.
The Federal Security Service said Maskhadov had Deniyev killed under pressure from rebel warlord Khattab, who uses only one name.
