Pearson, Borchart in Battle of the Valley

Cody Pearson, The Times’ Valley player of the year from Notre Dame High, and four-time All-Valley selection Scott Borchart of Chaminade top the selections for the Southern Section team in the “Battle of the Valley” senior all-star game May 12 at Cal State Northridge.

Also on the team are Dustin Villepigue of Simi Valley, Kyle Kegley of Thousand Oaks, Johnny Gray of Agoura, Aaron Bobik of Newbury Park, Andrew Moore and Kingsley Anyanwu of Crespi, Michael Jenkins of St. Francis, Tony Johnson of Quartz Hill, Michael Luderer of Notre Dame, Casey Markovic of Bell-Jeff and Colin Ward-Henninger of Buckley.

Rob DiMuro of Notre Dame will coach the Southern Section team.

Leading the City Section all-stars is Cecil Brown of Canoga Park, who averaged 34.5 points.

Coach Rob Bloom of North Hollywood also will have Shayne Berry and Scott Johnston of Chatsworth, George O’Garro and Earnest Williams of Sylmar, Mike Charleston and DeWayne Anderson of Grant, Ramall Goodrich of Monroe, Haig Tatian of Birmingham, Ken Hauser and Nathan Stern of North Hollywood and Derrick Lambey of Cleveland.

* Rafael Berumen of Simi Valley, who played last season at L.A. City College, has signed with Miami.

GOLF

* The Cal State Northridge women’s team signed Adrienne Cipparone of Poway High and Emma Wahlgren of Hersby High in Sweden.

Cipparone was most valuable player for Poway in 2000 and was medalist in 11 of 19 matches.

Chris Rulfs, from Desert Mountain High in Scottsdale, Ariz., signed with the men’s team.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Mark Nevers of Oak Park High, runner-up in the state Division IV cross-country final in November, will attend Brigham Young and try to make the Cougars’ cross-country and track teams as a walk-on.

Nevers, 11th in the West region cross-country championships in December, has run 4:21.22 in the 1,600 meters and 9:16.52 in the 3,200.

SOFTBALL

* El Camino Real has been moved up to the 12-team Green Division of the Thousand Oaks tournament, which begins today, after Cerritos requested to be moved down to the White Division because it will be without several players.

El Camino Real will play Santa Maria Righetti at 1:15 p.m. and Thousand Oaks at 4:45 today.

MOTOR SPORTS

* Bryan Herta of Valencia had the fifth-fastest speed in Friday’s afternoon practice session for the Firestone Firehawk 600 on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

Herta averaged 232.056 mph in his Zakspeed/Forsythe Reynard-Ford around the 1.5-mile oval, which produces high speeds because of its 24-degree banked turns.

Kenny Brack had the fastest clocking at 233.785 in his Team Rahal Lola-Ford.
