* Covad Communications Group Inc. said its fiscal second-quarter loss widened to $175.5 million, or $1.01 a share, from $153 million, or $1, a year ago, on higher network costs and charges to close a subsidiary. The high-speed Internet access provider said its loss excluding one-time charges widened to $141.8 million from $152.7 million a year ago. Sales doubled to $87 million. Covad, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, said it expects little sales growth this quarter compared with the second.

* Engage Inc., an interactive marketing and software company that’s majority-owned by CMGI Inc., laid off 100 workers and warned that 125 more jobs could be cut if it can’t find a buyer for its online advertising business. The layoffs amounted to 18.5% of its work force. Engage plans to concentrate on its content management software. The company would not say whether a deadline had been set for selling the unit or moving ahead with additional layoffs.
