Andy Goodenough threw for 411 yards and three touchdowns and Palomar College held off host Chaffey, 20-14, in the Southern California Bowl on Saturday afternoon.
The sophomore from Corvallis, Ore., completed 24 of 34 passes to lead the Comets, who move on to the California Community College Championship next week in Visalia. They’ll face San Francisco, a 17-9 winner over Fresno.
Palomar (10-1) built a 20-0 lead as Goodenough threw two touchdown passes to receiver Larry Slaughter in the first quarter. Slaughter had a season-best eight catches for 126 yards.
Chaffey (10-1) mounted a rally in the third quarter when Lamar Anderson scored on an 80-yard kickoff return. Anderson helped set up the Panthers’ other touchdown, hauling in a tipped pass for a 48-yard gain before Jeremiah Cockheran’s 20-yard touchdown pass from Jeff Disney with 2:26 left in the third quarter.
