Community Clinics Need Financial Aid

“Neighborhood Clinic Getting a Shot in Arm” (Dec. 9) offered a small window into the important work done by free and community clinics in our community. These clinics play a vital role in the safety net, providing health care to the uninsured. The primary care provided by clinics such as the Hollywood Sunset Free Clinic and the Los Angeles Free Clinic is preventive in nature and treats most conditions early, before disease spreads, threatens lives and necessitates costly hospital visits.
As our economy worsens, more people are losing their health insurance. Since September, the L.A. Free Clinic has seen a 50% increase in patient visits. In responding to this growing need, the safety net is being stretched to its limits and needs the support of the community now more than ever.
