Idaho State Signs Bolsa Grande’s Baughman

Doug Baughman, who set the county’s single-game passing yardage record when the threw for 564 yards for Bolsa Grande against La Quinta in 1996, has signed to play for Idaho State.
Baughman finished his two-year career at Cerritos College last season by leading the Falcons to a 31-17 victory over Orange Coast in the Strawberry Bowl. He completed 21 of 33 pass attempts for a career-high 346 yards and two touchdowns against the Pirates.
Baughman is second in the county high school record book with 75 touchdown passes for Bolsa Grande (1996-98).
* Fullerton College defensive back Guy Porter, a graduate of Sunny Hills High, has signed to play at Colorado State.
* Ocean View’s Phillip Smith, a first-team All-Golden West League selection, will attend Fresno State. The 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver had 59 receptions for 1,021 yards last season and scored 13 touchdowns.

Carolyn Staples, a midfielder at Calvary Chapel, has signed to play at USC next season, Trojan Coach Jim Millinder announced.
A member of the Southern California Blues under-18 club team, Staples, who lives in Mission Viejo, played her freshman and sophomore seasons at Santa Margarita before transferring to Calvary Chapel.
* Orange Coast has been ranked by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. as the No. 4 community college men’s team in the nation. The Pirates, coached by Laird Hayes, finished 19-4-4 overall and 11-2-1 in the Orange Empire Conference, advancing to the state title game.
